
“Chicahua”
Dressed
as a colorful Mexica (me-SHEE-ka) dancer, this 3" bear (without the
headdress), is made of saddle deerskin. The Mexica/Aztecs are Native
American people who dominated Northern Mexico in the 16th century. In
1325, they founded the town of TENOCHTITLAN (modern Mexico City). Dancing
was and is a very important part of the Mexica heritage. Conch shellsare
blown to call each ceremony to order. Dances represent the forces of
nature, the universal four corners of the earth, human existence, and the
struggle for power among the elements.
